Rickson Gracie returned to Valente Brothers last weekend, and taught a riveting two day seminar on the fundamental movements underlying Gracie Jiujitsu self defense, grappling, throwing and striking techniques. A key focus was Rickson’s strategy in the standing fighting range and how his style of fighting can safely and effectively negate an opponent’s strengths in this range. Rickson also covered the self defense guard in great detail, and explained how he searched in every position to follow his father, Grandmaster Helio Gracie’s advice to him to “transfer all the pain and suffering of a position on to your opponent.”
Participants were treated to a special guest to the seminar: Rickson’s brother, Relson, who was accompanied by his son Rhalan. The brothers, separated by teaching duties in different parts of the country, had not shared the same mat together in almost twenty years. Both brothers share the characteristic of complete confidence in jiujitsu as a fighting art.

Rickson, always scientific and logical in his approach to jiujitsu, demonstrated the mechanics of a number of essential self defense positions. Students were treated to a lengthy question and answer session at the end of the seminar where they could ask the master any question they wanted. Rickson responded in detail to questions about his exercise routine, diet, the highlights of his fighting career, and his spiritual and philosophical views.
As he spoke about his philosophy of life, he stressed the importance that jiu-jitsu can have to the lives of those in the community at large. He concluded the seminar by explaining how competition can detract from the core purpose of jiu-jitsu training: self defense.
